About me

I’ve grown up immersed in the digital era.  My first job was duping 5.25″ floppies for my father’s friend who’d written a Sherlock Holmes story collection; sort of a primitive e-book concept as far as I understood.  Then again, I didn’t really know I was 5.  I didn’t really get too deep into the guts of technology until college, when I somehow ended up pre-admitted to the computer engineering program at UCSD; it was impacted at the time, and yet I somehow walked right into it…still no idea how that happened.

Since then (1995) I’ve worked in technology pretty much non-stop.  I’ve worked with a program funded by Cal-Space under Sally Ride.  I worked for the NFL doing their tech support and desktop farm build out for the media during SuperBowl 32.  Eventually I ended up in a neuroscience lab where I got my first introduction to distributed computing.  I had installed linux for the first time a month or so prior but my studies didn’t really allow me much time to play with it.  Then one day my boss said “You know that linux stuff, right?   Go run that 32 node cluster”.  Easy right?  (read, learning curve!).  Luckily the team that had written the clustering harness (Rocks, based out of SDSC: http://www.rocksclusters.org/wordpress/) wasn’t far away and they were tightly affiliated with the lab.  Later we launched a project called the Biomedical Informatics Research Network, where I was one of the primary technical resources during the design and build out of  a multi site distributed data grid.

After my time with High Performance Distributed Computing, neuroscience and all the fun times of the academic world I found myself walking into the doors of a rapidly growing SaaS provider.  Turns out that Grids and Cluster was a great foundation for clouds and data centers.  I’m now the lead for one of the application “pods”.  I’m in charge of the fleet of shared SOA services, as well as the platform of hosts used to power the entire video and screen sharing infrastructure with my team of 4 engineers.
